Waterbuck

Waterbuck are big, shaggy antelope of sub-Saharan Africa, and true to the name they never stray far from water, grazing the coarse grasses along rivers and through savanna woodland that other animals pass up. Bulls stand around 50 inches at the shoulder and can top 600 pounds, and only they carry horns — heavily ringed, widely spaced, sweeping back and up to about 40 inches. The coarse gray-brown to reddish coat gives off an oily, strong-smelling secretion thought to waterproof it, and the surest mark is on the rump: a bold white ring circling a dark rump on the common waterbuck, broad white patches on either side on the defassa form. Cows and calves move in small herds, young bulls in bachelor groups, and mature bulls hold territories, and they can live 18 years.
